Day 1: Departure for Tbilisi
Fly to Tbilisi.
Day 2: Tbilisi
After arrival in Tbilisi, meet your guide and driver and transfer to a hotel.
After breakfast, Tbilisi walking tour awaits you! Tbilisi is a modern vibrant city with ancient culture and history. Enjoy visiting century old churches, as well as take a pleasant walk in the winding streets to get a taste of the European and Asian cultures. We visit the oldest church of Tbilisi – Anchiskhati and listen to world famous Georgian monastic singing. In the evening we have a lecture about Georgian Orthodox Church.
Day 3: Tbilisi/David Gareji/Sighnaghi
Drive to visit David Gareja monastery (6th c). The complex includes dozens of cells, churches, chapels, refectories and living quarters hollowed out of the rock face. Despite the harsh environment, the monastery remained an important center of religious and cultural activities for many centuries. Georgians consider this place a second Jerusalem. Visit Lavra and Udabno monasteries. Drive 18th century town of Sighnaghi, romantic city which was the royal town for Georgian kings.
Day 4: Sighnaghi/Telavi/Tbilisi
Georgia as one of the oldest Christian countries in the World (4th c) and is rich with century old churches and monasteries. Today we will visit Alaverdi cathedral (11th c), Ikalto monastery (6-7th cc) and Shuamta monastery (6-7th cc). Lunch will be served at the local family with delicious food and wine. Return to Tbilisi and attend the Washing of the Feet Ceremony at the church.
Day 5: Tbilisi/Ananuri/Mtskheta/Tbilisi
In the morning we visit a truly picturesque fortified church of Ananuri with the biggest carving in Georgia. Later we visit a local farmer to taste his Bio wines and together with his family dye Easter eggs in red. Georgians specifically obtain madder roots and onion peels, the combination of which gives Easter eggs special glow and vivid red color. Eggs are traditionally dyed on Good Friday and symbolize Christ’s rebirth and eternal life.
Continue to Mskheta, the ancient capital of Georgia housing two UNESCO Sites: Jvari monastery (6th c) and Svetitskhoveli cathedral (11th c). Attend the ceremony of Deposition and Lamentation of Christ. Afterwards return back to Tbilisi.
Day 6: Tbilisi/Uplistsikhe/Kutaisi
Depart for Uplistsikhe Cave Town and enjoy a cave walk. The town is dug in the sun-stone plateau and is of beautiful golden color. Initially there had been more than 500 caves, but during the existence of 3000 years it has lost much of it. Continue to Kutaisi and visit the old town as well as UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bagrati Cathedral. In the evening we get ready for the most exciting part of our journey and depart for Gelati UNESCO World Heritage Church to meet 12am at the church with special Easter prayer and with hundreds of Georgians celebrating Easter in the church.
Day 7: Kutaisi/Tbilisi
On Easter Sunday some of the families visit the cemetery to say Christ is Risen to their deceased family members and friends. Therefor we’ll see many people on the road side cemeteries, some even feasting.
We drive back to Tbilisi and enjoy a free afternoon.
