Wine of Monks - Georgia Tourism and Attractions

Wine of Monks

Duration 8hours

Georgia is the house to more than 500 endemic varieties of vine. Georgians keep wine with grape skins for several days and then mature wine in the clay jars “Qvevri” buried under the ground. This way of making wine is recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

We’ll visit a “Qvevri” master who will demonstrate how clay vessels are made. Later travel to picturesque Alaverdi Cathedral to taste very special wine made by monks in an ancient wine-cellar. Continue to Gremi – the church with the beautiful murals and an interesting museum. Your last stop today will be local farmer’s winery where you learn more about the traditional way of wine-making and try red and white wines and Georgian fire-water (vodka) “Chacha”. Return to Tbilisi.

  • Available daily, Gremi Museum closed on Monday, church is available daily
